I think that the special niche we occupy in the scientific world is that
- we want to advance biology, and understand biological questions and traditional methods in computational biology
- we love deep learning, and can use it to give traditional methods modern superpowers
- we love math and probability, and so aren’t afraid to develop new models.
This is a powerful combination for research, in part because it’s not so common. On the other hand, this triple intersection limits the population of people who are truly going to thrive in the group. We are hoping to find those rare people in that intersection!
Culturally, we are a “high expectations (for mentee) and deep devotion (from mentor)” research group. Please read our expectations of group members. Our work to create a positive group culture has been recognized by a McDougall Mentorship Award.
Trainee position
We are looking for a trainee (PhD or postdoc) who can help develop the next generation of our transformer-based models of natural selection. As such, you should have the ability to apply deep learning in a creative way, and have completed a major research project.
If you are interested in applying, please email me with three things:
- A link to a preprint or publication you have written
- A link to the corresponding code on a repository
- A short description of a part of the project that you are especially proud of, preferably with links to the code.
We are very interested in finding the right person, and less worried about the timing. If you are only going to be available next year, that’s fine, but please let me know now so we know you are coming.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Data engineer position
We have a Data Engineer - Bioinformatics position available. Although this person will be hired through HHMI and located at Janelia Farm in Virginia, they will be working with us closely to enable next-generation protein evolution models.
